How to Measure for a Bathroom Vanity Before You Buy

A vanity needs to fit the room and work with the existing plumbing. Record the site conditions before comparing widths or choosing a finish.

Make a measured sketch of the space

Record available wall width, usable depth and the intended counter height. Mark the door swing, toilet, shower screen and any trim that affects placement. Measure at more than one height if walls or floors are uneven. Check that doors and drawers can open without hitting nearby fixtures.

Do not choose a unit simply because its listed width matches the wall opening. Ask whether the dimension includes the countertop overhang, handles or other projecting parts. A small installation gap may be needed; the product instructions and a qualified installer should determine what is suitable for your site.

Locate the water supply and drain

Mark the positions of the supply valves and drain relative to the finished floor and a side wall. Photograph the existing connections for discussion with your installer. Drawers and shelves inside a new vanity may conflict with pipework even when the overall cabinet fits.

Wall-mounted vanities need a suitable supporting wall and the specified mounting method. A freestanding unit may still require anchoring. These checks should happen before purchase, not after cutting a cabinet to make it fit. Plumbing and structural changes belong with qualified professionals and applicable local requirements.

Confirm exactly what is included

Listings can describe a cabinet only, a cabinet with basin, or a wider set. Check the parts list for countertop, sink, faucet, drain assembly, handles and mounting hardware. A styled mirror in a photograph is not evidence that it is included. Confirm the faucet hole count and any stated sink compatibility.

Read the construction and care information, especially around exposed edges and water contact. “Bathroom furniture” does not mean the unit tolerates standing water. Check package count and delivery dimensions as well; a basin or countertop may arrive separately from the cabinet.

Take a clear checklist to the listing

  • Room width, depth and fixture clearances.
  • Supply and drain positions.
  • Wall support and mounting requirements.
  • Countertop, basin and faucet compatibility.
  • Included parts, packages and assembly instructions.

Compare bathroom vanities only after these details are recorded. If an important measurement is absent, send the item code and your question before placing an order. Treat this guide as a buying checklist; the manufacturer’s instructions and your installer govern installation.
